i've spent the past couple months building a maze around my house. i originally did it for my own amusement, but as time passed i started seeing random people showing up and wandering about the maze or just hanging out with groups of friends there. i realized after all the work i put into it i might as well start putting some LMs (or slurls) out there, so other people could enjoy it.

so, if you have some time to kill or just want to wander about and play with my stuff, here's the slurl:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Costa%20Rica/200/76/25

enjoy it and let me know what you think. i'm there messing about with it most evenings. feel free to IM me if you have any questions or just want to express your undying love for me. ^_^

Dario Argento
A psychic who can read minds picks up the thoughts of a murderer in the audience and soon becomes a victim. An English pianist gets involved in solving the murders, but finds many of his avenues of inquiry cut off by new murders, and he begins to wonder how the murderer can track his movements so closely.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073582/

"Dementia 13"
Francis Ford Coppola
John Haloran has a fatal heart attack, but his wife Louise won't get any of the inheritance when Lady Haloran dies if John is dead. Seven years earlier John's sister Kathleen was drowned in the pond, and the Halorans enact a morbid ritual in remembrance. Secrets shroud the sister's demise, and soon the family and guests begin experiencing an attrition problem.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056983/

Attention Dreamland Citizens

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Dreamland has apparently discontinued *without notice* the 50% market value buyback program.  Several friends who own Dreamland parcels (in one case an entire sim) are being forced to abandon their holdings back to Dreamland ACS or face paying tier for land that is unsellable in the current market and which they will not be using due to changes in circumstance.

Since Lindens really don't care what goes on "out in the islands" I don't suppose there is much to be done except to abandon your land and let ACS have an increasing amount of land on the books that is eating into the bottom line; after all, SOMEbody has to pay tier on the land whether anyone "owns" it or not.

I saw the writing on the wall when LL announced new land pricing and I got out ahead of the bust.  My condolences to those of you who won't have that opportunity.

Totally not sure what I'm doing

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 1:09 PM
When I first downloaded Second Life back in November, I was crazy excited about it. Now, months later, I'm logging in just to make my tier payment every month. I don't really understand what went wrong, but I've just had a very hard time finding any "there" there, and I was hoping that perhaps I could get the advice of others.

It seems like every time I get a chance to log in and sit down for a couple of hours, there's little to do. For a while, I was going to the Bisexuals in Second Life meetings, but the meeting time I could make was somewhat phased out. I've not really figured out how to be social and make friends and contacts, and when I do get on the grid, I look in the events list and see nothing going on that I feel engaged with. I'm a computer scientist, musician, and videographer, so I thought perhaps I should buy some land and put together a theater to show off videos from one of my video blogs, hopefully with the intention of starting a group (the videos focus on green living), but I've quickly realized what a serious job running and promoting an SL group is, and I know I don't have that kind of time. It would take hours for me to do the basic things, my building and furniture choices were bad for my parcel prim count, and now I have a big ol' pointless building half-furnished.

I just honestly don't knkow what I'm doing in SL and it's reaching a point where selling or abandoning my land and retiring my account seems like a good idea. So many people seem to get so much from SL, though, that I though perhaps I'd ask on here. What am I doing in SL? What should I be doing? I feel really conflicted and confused about the entire thing at this point.

Good Background for Photo Op

Looking for a good urban modern setting as a background for some snaps of a new Superhero costume I've put together in SL. Any suggestions from the peanut gallery? Thanks in advance.

Attack of the invisible skirt

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Bought my wedding dress last night and while it's absolutely stunning, the underskirt is doing that blimmin' annoying invisible thing :-(
A few of my other gowns do this too and it's getting on my nerves. I've tried editing the length then switching back, taking off then putting on again, relogging.. the lot. Anything i can do?

Also, anyone here from Avilion too?I'm just wondering if any of you have had a wedding on any of the sims and can talk a very nervous bride to be through it :-)

Augustus's house is nearly finished, there are only a few minor texture adjustments left to do here and there. He has moved in and is settling well... and I begin to consider another design?

Drat that Dr. Mason! He started talking about "Gentlemen's Clubs", and once we got straightened out he was talking about an egalitarian explorer’s club with a penchant for research, I began to see the building; laboratory basement, function room/gathering area on the ground floor, offices or specialty rooms on the first floor and telescope garden on the roof.

I have the textures, and I have the floor layout, but I do not have the land. If I were to build it, there is no place to put the dratted thing, and I already have the BAS Abwaschbecken cluttering my pockets as it is.

The Monstrosity topped out at 70 prims, before furnishings and light fixtures were installed. The boat house without furnishings and extras weighs in at 75 prims. My initial laboratory building design measures about the same… and that was before I began to work with textures.

Hrm… the Baron has been muttering about having space, but not enough prims to be able to leave out his workbench… perhaps I have another build to consider.

The fresh homefries in the earlier recipe were yummy. They were a bit oily. I think the amount of oil could have been significantly decreased and the amount of peppers and onions increased to a third and been even better.

This morning, I'm vacuuming and doing laundry. I'd like to get a dump run in too, but we'll see.

I ordered more RAM for the iMac a few days ago.
When it arrived I realised that in my haste I had ordered 4 X 1GB sticks when I need 2 x 2GB sticks.
Buffoon.
So I ordered again correctly.
In the meantime I have bumped myself up to 2GB.
Yup, things are faster. Mostly.
But what I was essentially doing it for was Second Life.
As they release a new, updated viewer every other week it seems, I find my SL experience resembling clumsy stop motion animation.
I did download the latest viewer and, yes, it all looked astounding. Salmon skies and rose sunsets, the light bouncing off the rippling oceans.
But as soon as I moved I crashed.
Back to about three versions ago again.
And even then it is a matter of time before movement resembles bad stop motion animation.

So, the extra 1GB has made some difference. I can function for quite a while. I certainly don't crash. But, eventually, and certainly around texture intensive builds, things get creaky.

Roll on the 2GB sticks arrival (though the iMac will only ever use 3.3).

A feeling in my gut tells me this will still only be a delaying tactic.
Hey, everyone.

I am a GM from the RP sim Lost Angels and am running the upcoming Fists of Fury tournament which is to take place every Saturday in June for various matches.

Rather than repeat myself, here is the link to the thread in the Lost Angels forum about the event.

http://www.cityoflostangels.biz/wiki/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=2&thread_id=2916

Anyone from any CCS sim may participate.

Lost Angels is a dark RP sim that has been up and running for a long time now. It uses the CCS roleplay/combat meter.

Feel free to check out the forum or visit Lost Angels. Anyone interested in learning about CCS or visiting CoLA can do so easily, and I highly encourage people to do so. A bit of a segway in the post about the tournament, but I thought I'd spread the word about the sim, as well.

Anyways, thanks for reading/skimming/glancing at this, and I hope to see you all at the various events or around SL.

Molotov Alva Tour

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Well, I went to the interview and it was interesting and went on "the tour" afterwards.

Click for Larger Image

This takes you to a variety of regions with text and commentary from Molotov himself. Each place has a Kiosk where you get new text and a link to the next destination. Don't be put of by "the slums" (like I was, only finding the kiosk there after someone else did) because the next destination is worth it.

Okay, just left a very productive Bead Society meeting. It's a neat project that works up quickly, I'll try to post pictures some time this weekend.

I am not working tomorrow because I'm heading out to visit [info]dashingdeviant. So I don't have to worry about getting up at the crack of dawn and I'm hungry.

So I'm trying this homefries recipe, the one with the fresh potatoes. I'm also adding some frozen bell peppers along with the onion.

Molotov Alva

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 7:55 AM

After an earlier posting, I went looking for Molotov Alva, and found him first go!

This was at Cinemax Island, at 2:41 PM SL Time (locally here it's 7:47am, so the interview is just over 2 hours away. Beware however, because today SL has a region roll-over, and the default teleport location puts you right in front of the two avatars (mine might not)!

HBO is looking at us.

Molotov Alva and His Search for the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey

HBO is gleefully calling this 'the first documentary shot entirely inside a virtual world.' My brain keeps poking me that this can't possibly be the first, but oh well.

I've watched the preview, and I'll watch the show to see what the public is being told about our world. But I have to say I was really unimpressed with the preview. Considering the emphasis on SL being a world we all create, he sure picked some lackluster, simple, boring areas to film in! He shoulda come to Babbage! :D

3D Mouse

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 7:17 AM

A friend of mine has just bought a Space Navigator 3D mouse. Apparently you can move it in three dimensions and do panning, rotating, and tilting. Might be the thing for moving about in a certain virtual world.

Convert Me

In the olden days, the filthy and hungry looked beyond the mortal coil for a nudge in the right direction when things looked grim, and now I'm doing the same. Within 100yrs, human civilization as we understand it will fall. I don't have to hit the nail on the head predicting the effects of things (global warming, war, declining fish stocks and biodiversity, scarce topsoil and fresh water, etc.) and they certainly won't all be as bad as some think...but that won't matter, will it? Enough will be. These aren't even -- strictly speaking -- solvable problems, but there is one thing that will give our species the material capability to survive what it has put in motion. Energy, massive amounts of it.

Ancestral energy sources, by definition, are limited and our emphasis on carbon conversion has made human progress toxic to itself. With enough energy, however, in the hands of enough smart people, currently ridiculous options become our salvation. Give us controlled fusion, and we may have a chance. Why isn't this the main goal of technology and industry on Earth? Ok, so if the Rest of Humanity doesn't -- I shudder to think -- see things my way, why isn't this even the tenth-most (or probably the hundredth-most) important thing going? Because to everyone with anything that needs to get done in their lives (myself included), it feels a little perverse to save the world...
